MC/Producer/Vocalist and DNA Family member HMZA. touches back down with his latest offering “Paul Bunyan” produced by turntablist, composer, and producer TEEKO (Larry June, Mark Ronson, Babyface Ray, Slum Village, Glenn Lewis, Jane Handcock, CAMP) and Lancecape (Slum Village and more). Within the last couple of years HMZA. has showed his ability to hop in and out of genre with the soul driven “Gotta Go” produced by HMZA. and RIDL, the Jake One produced single and short film “Lost Time”, and the dystopian world of “Mr Stranger Is Your Friend In the Apocalypse” produced by frequent collaborator 5iLL. “Paul Bunyan” puts HMZA. in MC mode with light soul vocals during the choruses. As a fan of D’ Angelo, Bilal, Raphael Saadiq and Badu (Soulquarians in general) I’ve appreciated the evolution and watching him reach into is vocal bag more often. As a product of growing up in musical environments, HMZA. has tapped back into his early Jazz influences and allowed it to become part of is toolkit. 1. Name, background, Influences: 1.My name is Hamza. I’m a rapper, singer & producer based out of the East Bay. My influences include J Dilla, Redman, Wu-Tang, D’Angelo, OutKast etc…
2. Info on the song: is it a single or part of a bigger project?: The song is a single that touches on new beginnings and how sometimes you have to “ watch it fall to build it back” better. It comes at a time in my personal life where I have found myself in the process of rebuilding, restructuring and reinvesting time into aspects of myself I deem most important. Music has always been a tool I have used to affirm and deeply understand my place in this world and hopefully it can do the same for whoever needs it.
3. What’s next? Shows, more music/projects, other productions etc etc: It is my goal this year to at least have a new single out for every month so definitely expect to hear more music from me soon. The next show will be Saturday 2/22 at GRAY AREA along side Del the Funky Homosapien of Hieroglyphics and Kool AD from Das Racist celebrating the life and legacy of Math from PTV.
