Word on the street is that there was a DJ Premier/Nipsey Hussle collaboration in the works prior to Nipsey Hussle's untimely demise last month, this remix/reimagining might be your best option unless there are some tracks in the vault. The project "The Premier Hussle" presented by Altered Crates & DJ Tiger puts Neighborhood Nip and Premier into an alternate universe where the listener can almost believe the synergy is real. DJ Tiger blends some of Premier's lesser known tracks with Nipsey's acapella's for the ultimate dream collabo Marvel issue of "What If?". Peep it out.
Pharoahe Monch is celebrating his birthday in the best way possible—by bringing us a new song and video. The Mr. Complex-directed clip "24 Hours" finds Pharoahe teaming with M.O.P.'s Lil Fame to get their money from a Wall Street type who owes them big bucks. The song was produced by Monch, with additional production from DJ OGee and Parks Vallely. It is, Pharoahe explained, not part of a larger project. Instead, it's a thank you to his supporters. "'24 Hours' is a standalone song that’s not attached to any upcoming project and is my first independent release," Monch says of the video, premiering on Complex. "I produced both the record and the video, wanting to give my fans something hardcore on my birthday, as a show of my appreciation. With Lil Fame holding me down, I feel as if it will boost everyone’s endorphin levels 100 percent." Fame says that more collabs will be happening soon. "The video is insane, and me and Pharoahe got more shit on the way!" he tells us. Watch "24 Hours" above.
"Born in the Bay, posted in Philly" producer Sideswipe follows up his last project, "Goners," released earlier this year with his latest release "Fairlight Fairlady". Sideswipe stays in the realm of gritty, sample based instrumentals that carry with or without vocals. 5 instrumentals deep is enough to get caught in the grimey soundscapes. Canadian producer DJ Critical Hype blends Wu-Tang Clan’s dark, alluring beats and 2 Chainz’s witty boasts and punchlines on a new mash-up mixtape fittingly dubbed Wu-Chainz: 36 Trap Houses. One track from the project, “2 Chainz Ain’t Nuthing ta Fuck Wit,” unfurls various 2 Chainz verses over the dusty drums and eerie samples from “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta F’ Wit.” The track opens with a portion of the emcee’s “Letter to Da Rap Game” and lifts a piece of his verse from De La Soul’s “Whoodeeni.” In a statement about the mixtape, Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA wrote that “it’s a bonanza to hear 2 Chainz rip a classic Wu beat.” “He’s one of the great lyricist from the south that proved lyricism is not regional but based on talent dedication focus and experience,” he added. “Whether you’re from the Slums of Shaolin or the Wards of the South, hip-hop is our voice.” Fellow Wu-Tang clan member Raekwon added, “That’s my G right there. He does his thing for real. 2 Chainz has always showed love to myself and The Clan, and we got nothing but love.” Atlanta’s A3C hip-hop festival, a two-day fest taking place on October 6th and 7th, recruited DJ Critical Hype to create the mash-up. “I thought the concept was sick and was instantly curious about how it would sound,” the DJ said in a statement. “Grinding the project out over the last few months, it became clear pretty quickly 2 Chainz’s witty southern raps sounded right at home over the incredible RZA/Wu production. I always enjoy the process of blending 2 different sounds together to create something new – so having the opportunity to do it with a legendary act like Wu-Tang and one of my favourite artists in 2 Chainz has been an amazing experience.” Every Wu-Tang Clan member is participating in a two-day experience in Atlanta that climaxes with the festival. The event will include performances from Wu-Tang Clan, J.I.D, PRhyme (DJ Premier and Royce Da 5’9), Talib Kweli, Westside Gunn + Conway, Jarren Benton, Deante Hitchcock, Lute and Lou the Human, among others.
