The Drums & Ammo "Eastmont Mall" hat commemorates the once cultural hub for the Black community in Oakland. Eastmont Mall holds a special place in the hearts of those who frequented the shopping center as customers or as employees. "Eastmont Mall was the epicenter of Black people" says Courtney Smith, owner of Courtsmith. "Eastmont Mall was a cultural hub and where a lot of creativity was started" says T. Scott (Ammbush) Founder of Drums & Ammo.
Originally known as Eastmont Mall, the mall was a popular and heavily used shopping destination during most of the 1970s and 1980s, but declined by the 1990s due to a huge drop in the average income level, and a concurrent increase in the crime rate in the mall and the surrounding neighborhoods.
We celebrate the Soul of this Oakland landmark by representing the best by product of its legacy: the people.
